Hi afronath12 – I like working with lots of groups of people. I like the people that I work with in my building, and I also really enjoy going to visit other scientists in their labs. Most of all I like doing outreach work and going to science festivals to talk about the project that I study – which is making red blood cells from stem cells. It’s great fun!
I work in Edinburgh and I really like it here, but it’s nice to travel around sometimes too.

      Hi afronath12,
I love working with other people as It’s good to have other people to bounce ideas off, chat about what we did at the weekend and go for coffee breaks with! It’s also good if you are having trouble because sometimes other people have good ideas that you can try!
I like working in Manchester as there are a lot of great scientists around us and we have great facilities here.

Hi Afronath: I love the group I am working in. I have 2 bosses – one is a surgeon like me, and the other one is a pure full time scientist who specialises in bone biology. I also work with a few other people: Adel, Nikki and Youri – and they all research on different aspects of bone biology, like bone cancer, or fragile bone. So it’s really interesting because everyone has a different perspective on things and so it means everybody always has lots of interesting ideas that you might not have thought of.

The great thing about the group is that it is very dynamic – we are all really excited about what we do and can’t wait to find a drug that really helps people heal quicker. We have found a way of helping bones heal quicker in mice, so we’re hoping to do the same in humans.

We are based at a hospital in London – so that’s handy for me because I can get involved in the operations that go on in the hospital where I can extract stem cells off people and then bring them back to the lab and experiment on them! This is a great set up and I’d love to continue working in a place like this in future.

      Hi afronath12,

Great question. Its really important to work somewhere that you enjoy spending time with your colleages- since you send up spending quite alot of time with them!! I work at the University of Manchester and over the last 4 years I’ve made alot of friends. Its nice to be able to call them up and ask for their advice and help, or if i could borrow something if i run out, or just of a coffee and a moan about things not working!
