I have designed an stem cell workshop so people can experience working with stem cells as well as learning how important they are in science.

If I won the money I’d use it to bring my workshop schools as at the moment, schools come to my university and if they are far away, this is not always possible. The money would allow lots more people to have a go, and hopefully become more enthusiasic about stem cell biology!

Another great question. If I were to win the £500, I would donate it back to this program so that it could expand and reach students in other ways. For instance, I would like to make it possible for some of the students to spend a day shadowing a scientist of their choice to really learn, first-hand, what scientific research is like. When I was a post-doc at University College London, I hosted students from time-to-time, as work-experience students, or as students who wanted to gain more insight into what a scientist did. This was rewarding for me and for the student, their peers, and their parents. Everyone learned and I feel like the more people understand the power and importance of scientific investigation, the better off our society will be.

      Hi Katie

Thanks for your question- it’s a very important one!

I’d like to buy some more resources for when I visit primary schools to tell them about my work. I currently have to keep borrowing things from my nephews dressing up box for the role plays we do about how cells interact and it would be great to have my own equipment! I would also put together sets of activities and experiments for the classes to do and some display boards explaining my research to take with me.

I would really like to run a fun event aimed at families and looking at some of the awesome things that could be made with stem cells in the future – like blood and meat grown in the lab. If that doesn’t work out then I would really like to go to an international conference, I haven’t been able to afford one yet out of my research budget 🙁

I would like to use to money to make a documentary about young people in science – to show how exciting and fun it can be and how much of an impact young scientists have made on society recently. Hopefully this will inspire more of you guys and people coming after you to think about contributing to science, or at least find out more about it.
