A PhD is a research project that you can undertake after you have done an undergraduate degree. It lasts three of four years and you normally get funded so that you get a small wage for those years. The point of a PhD is to do independent research – so we have supervisors to guide us but are generally expected to do all of it ourselves.
At the end you have to produce a big write-up of your project and then have an interview with a group of examiners.
When you have finished a PhD you get to call yourself Dr!
