Wow good question, i’ve had to think quite hard about this one!

Being a scientist means a great deal to me, I worked really hard to get where I am today, I was never top of my class at anything, I have always had to really study to pass exams etc, so I am really proud of what I have achieved. I also feel that the experiments I do may play a small part in helping people in the future and that a great feeling!
I think science is such an important subject and it’s really great to be a part of it.

Being a scientist is an incredible privelege. It’s a great job because it’s fascinating and fun. There aren’t many jobs that actually get you up in the morning – you never know what’s going to happen. I couldn’t imagine doing a job that is the same everyday. It does mean you have to be one your toes all the time.

Most importantly, you are also in the incredible position to be able to contribute to your fellow people! That’s the most amazing thing about this. What you’re doing might actually help thousands of people in the world. My research group is looking at speeding up fracture healing. Now, if we can get that to work in humans, we’d be able to help thousands of people who might need to have amputations otherwise, or get them up and walking and doing stuff again. This is the same for all other research, so it’s pretty inspiring stuff!

It means more than turning up for work each day- its something thats kinda inside you- like always wanting to know WHY and HOW something happens and for me its important to know how to FIX it when things go wrong. i certainly dont go home and read science books all night long, but i am a naturally nosey person and when i find a question that needs answering, and a method of doing so, i like putting the 2 together- to me thats what a scientist really is!
