      Hi again penguin

They get signals from the wound that tell them to travel from the bone marrow to the site of injury. Somewhere along the way they differentiate into different subsets- broadly immune cells (or leukocytes), endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) and mesenchymal stem cells (MSC). the immune cells go in and clean up any infection, the EPCs help establish new blood vessels and the MSCs repair the tissue. The problem in diabetes is the cells dont function properly, they dont differentiate properly, they dont respond correctly to the signals and they are basically a nuisance! So the wound never heals properly.
