i know that this has nothing to do with stem cells but i was wondering if any of you knew if this was true if there is

Question: i know that this has nothing to do with stem cells but i was wondering if any of you knew if this was true if there is one of those whirl pools (or what ever they are called) if a ship rode this twice then put on all its engines to get it out would it be able to? i saw this somewhere. i was wondering if the force of the water spinning would help?

  I have no idea I’m afraid!! I think that the power of water and the tides are great, as we saw in the tsunami in Japan last week, so I’m not sure if a ships engines would be able to cope with it and get it out. But you might have a point that if the forces of the water were working in the right way, it might be able to help.
  
  All I do know is that I would not like to be on that ship if this happened!!

  Hi lizziebee – interesting question! I do a lot of sea kayaking so I’ve thought about this too, although we don’t encounter many whirlpools in the UK.
  I think to be honest it depends entirely on the strength of the whirlpool and how big the ships engines are! Sorry that I can’t answer your question any more than that.

  Hi lizzie, haha, you are really testing us out!! It is possible, but it depends on the power of the ship and the pull of the whirlpool. As you get closer to the middle, the velocity of the ship increases and therefore the force pulling the ship to the centre of the whirlpool increases. If the power of the engines can overcome this pull, then yes, it can escape along a tangent of the circle it is going around, otherwise, it’d just get sucked in. It’s like planets that orbit the sun – will the Earth eventually crash into the sun? maybe we should think about making an enormous engine to propel us out of the solar system!
