HI Karine,
This sort of follows on from your previous question. I have never really come across anyone that thinks my work is unethical. I have however spoken to and discussed my work with lots of people with different beliefs, some of whom don’t agree with embryonic stem cells, and some that do.
A few people are unhappy with the use of embryonic stem cells because of the fact they come from embryo’s but, as there are other ways to make them, without destroying an embryo and lots of researchers (including me) are working on this.
I normally find that most people are happy to listen to why we are doing the experiments we do, and once you explain the reasoning behind it, and the good that stem cell research can do, most people are actually in agreement with it, and the ones that are not, at least have a better understanding of the science.
I would never try and force someone into believing something that they were not happy with, we are all different and entitled to our own opinions and that’s what makes life interesting!

Hi again, as long as the people are making an educated opinion, in other words, they understand what it is they are objecting to, then it’s ok because it’s good for people to have an opinion. Not everyone’s going to agree. But it is important they understand the implications of what they are objecting to. So they’d need to understand there’s a difference between adult and embryonic stem cell research, the difference between using embryos that are going to die anyway and those that are not, etc etc. But I also think it is important that they understand how the research can help so many people in future and by stopping all stem cell research, this may never be achieved.
